Artist Thierry Cohen has re-imagined some of the world’s famous cities without light and air pollution and the results are absolutely beautiful. Instead of lights and smog, famous sky-lines are lit up by billions of stars. This series, entitled Darkened Cities, aims to highlight the fact that by chasing away the dark with lights we have given up the majestic night-sky views.

By combining two realities, I am making a third that you cannot see … but it exists! I am showing you the missing stars, said Cohen to WIRED.

He photographed the city and then travelled to a less urban area and photographed the sky at the same latitude. He combined the city skyline with the star-lit sky shot. To capture these images Cohen used under-exposure and the day for night technique.
