The infamous hacktivist Anonymous has been around dishing-out vigilant justice since 2008. Here are 5 examples of famous Anonymous hacks:
1. The Church of Scientology
Back in 2008 Project Chanology was Anonymous’s attack against the Church of Scientology. The group hacked into one of the church’s recruitment videos which featured. When the church demanded that the hacked video be taken down, the group responded by taking down the Church’s website.
2. Credit Card Chaos
When companies like PayPal, Visa and MasterCard blocked donations to WikiLeaks, Operation Payback was born. The hack involved DDoS attacks that caused the companies to go offline and apparently ended up costing PayPal almost $6 million.
3. US Department of Justice
In 2012 The US Department of Justice shut down the Megaupload file sharing service which cause the hacktivist group to launch the biggest DDoD attack ever and took down US Government websites.
4. Westboro Baptist Church
Anonymous have hacked the WBC a whole bunch of times and millions thank them for it. Some of their attacks include taking down the Church’s website, highjacking Shirley Roper-Phelps’ Twitter account as well as arranging an elaborate shutdown of a proposed protest against the funerals of victims of the tragic Sandy Hook victims.
In 2011 Operation Sony involved Anonymous hacking Sony’s site because the company sued hacker George Hotz for Hacking the PS3.
