HBO has confirmed that the four leaked episodes are legit in a statement:

Sadly, it seems the leaked four episodes of the upcoming season of Game of Thrones originated from within a group approved by HBO to receive them.

No culprit has been confirmed, with HBO stating that it is “actively assessing how this breach occurred“, but it would seem that the leak might have come from reviewers. Season 5 of Game of Thrones review screeners were sent out to the press for review purposes and, despite many precautions being taken, the leaked occurred one day before the official premier. The four episodes were uploaded to torrent sites like KickassTorrents, The Pirate Bay and RARBG between 9pm and 10pm on Saturday and has since been downloaded over 800 000 times (at the time of writing this article).

This is not the first time that the new season has fallen victim to a leak as the trailer was captured on a cellphone and uploaded online before the official premier of the trailer. Also, Game of Thrones is use to being pirated and boasts the title of the most pirated show in the world. Die-heart fans are pretty pissed about the leak because it will make it so much harder to avoid spoilers. But the show’s creators don’t seem to be too bothered about being downloaded illegally so many tomes. CEO of Time Warner, Jeff Bewkes stated in 2013 that:

If you go around the world, I think you’re right, that Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world. Now that’s better than an Emmy.

The four leaked episodes are in 480p, which is deterring true fans of the show even more because it is normally aired in 720p or 1028p.
