The new movie unfortunately doesn’t see Will Smith returning to reprise his 1996 role as Captain Steven “Steve” Hiller, but Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Bill Pullman will be back. Other stars include Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Joey King, Brent Spinner and Travis Tope. The movie will be directed and co-produced by Roland Emmerich, who has stated that:
I’m beyond excited to bring the sequel to ‘Independence Day’ to New Mexico. With their state of the art Albuquerque Studios, the robust tax incentive program, the proximity to Los Angeles and last but not least its talented cast and crew make New Mexico a great fit for my movie.
The new movie picks up where the other movie left off and sees Earth preparing for the alien invaders’ return. The nations of Earth unite to use recovered alien technology from the previous invasion to device a defence program to protect the planet from being taken over by aliens. But the attack from the aliens is more than was anticipated and chances for success seem impossible, until a few brave men and women fight to save the world against complete extinction.
The movie is set to hit cinemas in South Africa on 24 June 2016.
