THX, has released a remade version of its iconic Deep Note sound that plays before THX-certified movies. The Deep Note sound was first composed in 1982 by Dr. James Moorer, who was a sound engineer at Lucasfilm at the time. The new version is part of THX’s new Eclipse trailer:
This isn’t the first time the iconic sound has been remastered, but it was previously only optimised for 5.1 surround sound. The new version is optimised for 7.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos audio presentations by using modern audio technologies. Dr. Moorer’s thinking behind the new sound was to stay true to the original piece he composed in 1982 and THX describes the new sound as:
Intensely more complex, taking the audience on an epic sensory journey unlike anything they’ve experienced before.
That’s a bold statement to make, but we must admit that it is one of those sounds everyone recognises and associates with watching movies. And the new sound is pretty intense and is a huge improvement on the original:
