A new SABC channel is coming to DStv on 11 May 2015 at 17:00. The new channel, called SABC Encore will be available on DStv channel 156 for DStv Premium, Extra, Compact and Family customers. The new channel will be a rerun entertainment channel that will show SABC golden oldies from the 80s and 90s, with SABC’s Head of Television, Verona Dukawekah saying that:

[The channel] is a celebration of the SABC’s content which has been produced over the years. Largely through the 80s and 90s. It will allow us as South Africans to celebrate the past. 

No details have been released as to the exact shows that will be aired on the channel, but we chosen some of the classics we’d love to see:

Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling (1987-1993)

When Basson-prize winner, Jacques Rynhard seems to have disappeared a journalist, Carina Human, starts to investigate his life and digs-up more than she bargained for.

Sgudi Snaysi (1986)

This Zulu show which first aired in 1986 made SABC history to achieve the highest ever audience ratings during the late 80s and early 90s. The show revolved around Sis’ May, a middle-age woman living in Soweto and the hilarious dramas in her life.

Orkney Snork Nie (1989-1992)

This classic comedy series revolved around a small mining town of Orkney, particularly the Van Tonder family. The show was lighthearted and saw how Hendrik and his wife, Maggie, balanced their family consisting of two teenagers, Hess and Whimpie and an older son, Ouboet. Ouboet is married to Yolanda and comes with his own drama. Later on in the show the family adopts two small orphan children, Riekie and Neelsie.

Mannemarak (19860-1992)

This children’s educational show centred around an alien called Mannemarak who comes to Earth on weekly trips to study more about our planet and its species. He makes educational videos for his alien friends, all before getting back to his home planet in time for dinner.

Shaka Zulu (1986)

Shaka Zulu was created by William C. Faurie and told the story of the historically great Zulu king, Shaka Zulu. The series experienced some drama during production and the SABC agreed with Harmony Gold, an American production company, to distribute the series in countries like America, England and West Germany. This caused this controversial series to gain international success and is a true South African gem.

Agter Elke Man (1985 – 1988)

Agter Elke Man premiered on TV1 in 1985 and starred Steve Hofmeyer, Christine Basson and Deon van Zyl. The show ran for 2 seasons until it was cancelled in 1988. As the title suggests this drama series centred around the women behind successful men.
