Google has announced that it will start honouring requests from revenge porn victims to have images or videos removed from search results.

This form of revenge refers to a situation when someone posts explicit images or videos online for the purposes of humiliating the victim as a form of revenge. This type of revenge is usually carried out by an ex-lover, but hackers have also been guilty of stealing people’s personal information which sometimes includes sexy snaps. As can be expected, revenge porn has severe negative effects for the victim and could be extremely devastating. It could destroy families, reputations and even careers.

Now, Google will set up a form for victims to fill out to request that explicit images or videos be removed from its search results if the person never consented to share them. This doesn’t mean that Google now has the power to remove this content from the websites that are hosting them. It means that if someone for instance searches your name on Google, these compromising images or videos will not appear in the Google Search results. This is a huge step forward because it would at least make it harder for people to find this stuff.

Google has not put the form for removal requests up yet, and it didn’t give any details as to what proof it will need from victims to honour these removal requests.
