Ultimate Star Wars is a mind-blowingly comprehensive Star Wars encyclopedia that spans across the entire Star Wars galaxy. The book is set-out chronologically from Episode I: The Phantom Menace to Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and includes animated spinoffs Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Not only is it a reference book, it’s also a great way to catch up for the new chapter, Episode VII: The Force Awakens coming out next year.Written by Patricia Barr, Adam Bray, Daniel Wallace and Ruder Windham, Ultimate Star Wars really covers everything in the expansive and seemingly endless Star Wars universe, including characters, creatures, locations, technology and vehicles. Each category also highlights key events relevant to that category, like under Characters and Creatures a Key Event features Yoda’s Trail in Rebels.If you are a Star Wars fan you need to get your hands on this extensive book and here’s why:
The book has 320 pages and is pretty massive, but looks really cool and would be a great coffee table book to reference at any time. As we mentioned above the chapters covered in Ultimate Star Wars are:
- Characters and Creatures;
- Technology; and
Each chapter follows the same layout which sets out a timeline of the specific topic. For instance in the Technology chapter the timeline features key technology in the popular franchise like lightsabers and battle droids. Each timeline follows the chronological order as we explained about and is colour-coded into three specific timeline categories, namely:
- Crisis in the Republic spans over Episode I and II;
- The Clone Wars spans over Episode II, Clone Wars, Episode IV, Episode V and Episode VI; and
- The Empire Era spans over Episode III, Rebels, Episode IV, Episode V and Episode VI.
Then each chapter sets out a comprehensive set of information and never-before-seen pictures of each category it covers. Characters and Creatures is really the chapter that shines in terms of detail and information covered. It obviously covers all the main characters and creatures, but (and more impressively) it also features the creatures and characters you probably never noticed or even knew existed in the Star Wars universe. We are for instance given massive amounts of info on Padmé Amidala’s background and the role she played in the franchise. But we also get information on those characters and creatures you’ve only briefly seen like the beautiful Jedi Master, Aayla Secura who loses her life when the clone troopers she commands turn their weapons on her.At the end of every chapter fans are treated to behind the scenes images and extra info on the making of this truly massive franchise. For instance in the Locations chapter we get to experience how some of the iconic Locations like the Capital City, Tatooine and the interior of the Death Star came to life.
As you can see, Ultimate Star Wars is really a must-have and is a great reference book for newbies and fans alike. It’s easy to get stuck in for hours exploring in-depth descriptions of characters, events, locations and vehicles.
