The popular American franchise, Starbucks Coffee Company has signed a deal with Taste Holdings to bring the franchise to South Africa. President of Starbucks Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Kris Engskov stated that:

We’re proud to be bringing Starbucks to South Africa. Working with Taste we’re going to deliver a great experience. The coffee market here is vibrant and growing fast – we want to be part of that growth, bringing the passion and energy of this remarkable country into the design of our first store and our first barista team. We can’t wait to get started.

The first Starbucks store is set to open its doors in Johannesburg by 2016, with the company saying that it plans to add additional stores after. This will be the first store the company will be bringing to sub-Saharan Africa.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Starbucks brand then you’ve probably recently returned from a long stay under a rock. It has become a regular feature in movies and TV shows and has become synonymous with hipster-culture and has been around since the 70s. The company already has 22 000 global locations and will be bringing its brewing magic to South Africa in an identical way to its other stores with an added “special reserve” that will be available exclusively in the SA store.
