D23 is basically every Disney fan’s dream and is a bi-annual Disney Comic Con-esque expo. D23 2015 took place at the Anaheim Convention Centre in Anaheim, California and featured everything from exhibits to daily panels, performances on the main stage and many fun and interactive events. Of course you will be able to burn a hole in your bank account as D23 offers some of the coolest and most extensive variety of games, merchandise, collectibles, exclusive items, cosplay, music events and lots more.
This year’s expo had some insanely epic moments and we’ve rounded up some of our favourites:
Friday featured the main event, i.e. news on all of the upcoming new features from Walt Disney Animation and Pixar Animation Studios.
Toy Story 4
I was personally most excited about some news on Toy Story 4 and it seems like I wasn’t alone; Randy Newman got a standing ovation when he performed You’ve Got a Friend in Me showing that other fans are amped as well. In this fourth movie in the popular Toy Story franchise, set for release in 2017, Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is reunited with Little Bo Peep (voiced by Annie Potts) and we will be treated with a love story. This is exciting as these two have been romantically involved since the first movie debuted in 1995, but sadly Bo didn’t make it into the 2010 movie, Toy Story 3.
Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter proclaimed that Toy Story 4 is:
[S]omething we’ve never done with Toy Story before. At Pixar and at Disney we only do a sequel if we have come up with something that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money. It’s about great stories, that’s what we do.
Star Wars: Rough One
Star Wars is now Disney owned which meant that two of the biggest franchises collided meaning more awesome stuff for fans. At the Lucasfilm event at D23 the first official photo from Star Wars: Rough One was released.
Producer Kathleen Kennedy explained the story behind Star Wars: Rough One:
Rough One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It foes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for Rough One.
The photo features the resistance fighters who plan on destroying the Death Star. These characters are portrayed by actors Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen
The Force Awakens and Harrison Ford
A poster for The Force Awakens was revealed, after which Harrison Ford surprised the crowd at D23 by appearing on stage saying:
Thank you so much. You guys have made my life.
The poster was created by artist Drew Struzan and serves as a promotional poster only. The official poster will later be created by Struzan who has created other famous movie posters like the previous Star Wars posters as well as Indian Jones. This poster shows Finn (John Boyega) wielding a lightsaber for the first time, which means this runaway Stormtrooper is some kind of Jedi as well.
The Jungle Book
Said to make you feel like a kid again, fans got treated with an official poster for the live-action The Jungle Book starring Bill Murray as the beloved Baloo, Sir Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Neel Sethi as Mowgli, Christopher Waken as King Louie and Luputa Nyong’o as Raksha.
