Exploding Kittens is a card game created by Elan Lee (Xbox, ARGs), Matthew Inman (The Oatmeal), and Shane Small (Xbox, Marvel). It was launched as a Kickstarter at the beginning of this year (January 20th 2015) and rapidly took off. The Kickstarter raised $8,782,571 from 219,382 backers and broke all sorts of records. Exploding Kittens is the most funded game in Kickstarter history and the most backers behind a Kickstarter project ever.

As fans of The Oatmeal, card games and of course kittens, we backed the project and recently received our very own first edition game.

The game shipped all the way to South Africa and was delivered at our door without any issues. It came in a neat little box along with a customised cartoon strip done by The Oatmeal that included our address details, name and location all within the cartoon – a very awesome touch. We ordered the original game as well as the NSFW expansion pack (allowing you to merge the decks and play with up to 8 players).

The card box is also awesome – with space for two decks and a little surprise inside (just for Kickstarter backers) which I won’t spoil if anyone is expecting their game in the post still.

The cards are really high quality and have that nice slippery feel that fancy cards have. The production partnership with the Cards Against Humanity guys really seems to have paid off. The cards are all illustrated by The Oatmeal and feature many of his characters/creatures/creations that will keep you entertained while playing.

So what about the actual game? The good news is that the game is extremely fun to play. A very simple set of rules gets you playing in no time at all, but some clever action cards such as the See The Future card (allowing you to peek at the next 3 cards in the deck) and the Nope cards (allowing you to block any action in the game) add some great strategic dynamics.

While it certainly isn’t a complex strategy game it does enough to keep you playing with a lot of variation. Overall the game is a lot like UNO but with a bit more strategy and a lot more fun. At just 15min a game it becomes very easy to keep on playing “just one more”…

I think the guys at Exploding Kittens did a great job creating a simple but really fun game to play, packaged with the signature Oatmeal humour, wrapped up as a quality product. You can put your NOPEsauce away, because this one is highly recommended.

If you weren’t a Kickstarter backer however you will have to pre-order for the next batch as they are not currently available. In the mean time, try find a friend who did pre-order and get your flaming kitten fix.
