Female video game characters and how they’re portrayed across the gaming industry has been a contentious issue. Many feel that females are over-sexualised in video games which leads to gender stereotyping, body image issues, eating disorders, sexism and other bad things.
Bulimia.com, an eating disorder support group decided to re-imagine what some of our favourite female video game characters would look like if they had realistic bodies in order to raise awareness of body image issues amongst females, explaining that:
Girl gamers–especially young ones–could develop a skewed image of how the female body should look. This might mark the beginning of obsessive thoughts about their own bodies, and self-questioning as to why they don’t align with their perceived ideal.
For example, plus-sized women are a rarity in video games, and when one does show up, she’s typically unusual looking. More often it seems video games are home to ultra-slim waistlines only.
The support group goes on to point out that graphics in video games have improved so much over the years that video game creators can easily create more accurate female video game characters. To drive its point home, Bulimia.com used the average measurements of an American female and applied them to some of the most well-know female characters:
