Love them or hate them, selfies are here to stay. Everyone’s obsessed with snapping shots of themselves sticking out their tongues, showing the peace sign or eating an ice-cream. But these narcissistic snaps could come at a deadly price according to a recent article published by Mashable.

According to the article a recent death of a 66-year-old Japanese man who fatally fell down the steps of the Taj Mahal while try to snap a selfie raised the selfie related-death toll in 2015 to 12. So far this year, only 8 people have been killed by shark attacks in comparison.

What causes selfies to be so dangerous? It’s simple really – while starring at a screen you’re hardly paying attention to your surroundings. This is clear from the numbers as the leading cause of selfie-related deaths (4) involve falling.  So be sure to always be aware of your surroundings when you’re taking a pictures of yourself or anything else for that matter. And remember that there are appropriate times to snap shots and that you shouldn’t risk your life just to take a picture of yourself hanging out of a moving train just for the sake of Likes.
