PCCW, a division of Hong Kong telecommunications operator HKT officially launched a new South African Internet-based video on demand (VoD) service, dubbed ONTAPtv.com. ONTAPtv.com joins other VoD services to suddenly emerge in the South African market, like Nasper’s ShowMax, Time’s Media’s Vidi and MTN’s FrontRow. The company recognised an opportunity based on the growing demand for VoD services in South Africa, with Chief Executive Officer of PCCW Global, Marc Halbfinger stating that:
We first invested in South Africa in 2012 through the acquisition of Gateway, and this has been extremely successful for us. We are today delighted to demonstrated our further commitment to South Africa through the launch of [this service].
This new VoD service lets you subscribe to monthly packages that include South African as well as international content consisting of series, movies and lifestyle programs. There are four packages available to choose from:
- Movie Package: Local and international movies from major studios like Warner Bros., MGM and BBC Worldwide
- Series Package: This package features great local and international series for any binge-watching you might feel like.
- Family Package: This package consists of predominately English content that is family friendly and suitable for children under the age of 16. Basically your new babysitter.
- Mega Pack: The package that has it all.
With this new service you’re also able to rent the latest Hollywood blockbusters that’ll constantly be updated as new releases become available. You can access all of this great content via ONTAPtv.com or on the iOS and Android apps, which means you can enjoy your shows or movies right on your smartphone or tablet.
The local content includes SABC series as well as an exciting sponsorship of projects of the Maxum Media Accelerator (MMA) to produce exclusive and original local content which will become available later this year. Head of ONTAPtv.com, Lindsay Servian explains that:
This partnership demonstrates our commitment to the development of exciting local content, whilst helping to grow the South African film and entertainment industry.
ONTAPtv.com also offers Chinese content, with Indian content to be added soon.
Content is streamed using the company’s advanced Adaptive Bit Rate technology or content can be downloaded to be viewed offline later. This is a great feature for a country like South Africa where many of us struggle with slow Internet speeds and a feature that stood out for me personally. There are two video quality settings, namely high resolution and low resolution. Downloaded content will be available on your device to watch offline for 48 hours.
Another unique feature that this new service boasts is its unique search bar that lets you choose between pre-existing keyword or your own and lets you use multiple keywords to find exactly what you’re in the mood for.
Before you subscribe to the service you can enjoy an indefinite free-trail period that allows you to test out selected content before you commit.
- R69 p/m – per package (excluding Mega Package);
