I have to admit it, I do not watch DStv or even support them. Their shows are outdated, you only see repeats, and they have more sports channels than an Irish street of pubs. Everything I watch is online and readily available for me when I want and how I want it, and it should be the same for everyone out there. You should not have to sit and watch reruns of every show on the planet because DStv does not have the ability to allow you to watch what you want, when you want it.

This is where ShowMax comes in, South Africa’s first dedicated streaming media platform, and I am in love with it. For R99 a month you can stream shows directly to your phone, PC, tablet, or Smart TV. It is instant, and cheap. You can choose what you want to watch, and the season you want to watch, and it plays. I missed out on a bunch of The Big Bang Theory, so I put ShowMax to the test to see exactly how well this streaming service works.

Big BangRunning a 4MB line my stream started within 10 seconds of pressing play, and it ran smoothly the entire time. The picture quality was also pretty decent, not HD or anything but it seems to fit the stream perfectly and prevent any buffering.

I was busy downloading a game on my Xbox One during one viewing session, and although the stream took around 30 seconds to load, it offered the same video quality and streaming speed as before. There are options for subtitles and different audio languages where possible.

There were a few issues I encountered when fast forwarding a movie, I had to exit full screen for it to kick in again and start playing. Although this didn’t happen all the time.

ShowMax has a great lineup of series and movies and they will continue to grow as the service grows. As for completed series like The Sopranos and Blue Bloods, you can go back and watch the past episodes right from season 1, perfect for those binge sessions. The service is missing a few shows that might draw more users in, once you have browsed through the list, you kind of know what you want to watch, but there are no shows like The Walking Dead, iZombie, and there are no reality shows. I am confident that this will change over time.

The service does not offer any way to download the media onto an app for later use, it is strictly streaming. That is okay as its fast and reliable.
