I had the privilege of sitting down with Mario dos Santos, CEO of Ster-Kinekor Entertainment, at rAge 2015 to chat about PlayStation in South Africa and other things that you might care about. Yes I tried to grill him about the PS4 in SA price drop, but he did not budge. No he does not know when PlayStation VR is releasing, nor the price of it.
After a few minutes of light conversation, Mario did say that he is super excited to play Fallout 4 (who isn’t really?).
How is PlayStation in SA going to make PS4 the best place to play this festive season?
Well this December we are very fortunate to have some great exclusive content as well as some exclusive bundles releasing. We have the limited edition Star Wars bundle, as well as the Call of Duty: Black Ops III bundle. These are both super bundles with some rather great designs too.
What about a Fallout 4 bundle. Is there any chance of us picking up a PS4 and getting Fallout 4 with it?
Well Fallout is a challenge because it’s a Microsoft partnership so we won’t be bundling Fallout 4 with any of our PS4 bundles.
What challenges do you face putting rAge together every year?
Getting code, we make an effort to get hands on experiences, on new games and code. That is very challenging, there are lots of events world-wide and in truth we are not the biggest market so it’s always a challenge getting code. There are a lot of security issues around getting code, so there is all of that too. You know, you want to show gamers new games and content, but sometimes it’s just not possible.
How has the local market taken the 1TB models of the PS4? Have they been selling well?
Well it is all about what is on offer. The Metal Gear Solid V bundle was an exclusive PS4 bundle and it sold very well due to its price and specials we ran on it, and it was still a 500GB. Consumers are looking for value, and even if it’s a 500Gb model. But going forward the focus will be shifted away from the 500GB model and we will offer better value bundles in the 1TB model. We have some 1TB bundles planned for the rest of the year going into 2016. We will be focusing all our attention on the 1TB going forward.
How is the PS4 selling? Do you find people are still going out and buying PS3s?
It’s funny you ask because the delta in our market between PS4 and PS3 is substantially lower than in most territories. But for us we have done the research and retailers have shared the same information, but it’s purely on economics. People have got R3000 to spend they don’t have R6000 to spend. So we are somewhat different to other markets. The PS3 still sells extremely well in SA.
Is it just a matter of time before PS3 ends its life cycle in SA?
We will have a little bit longer of a life span, but even that is not what we have seen with PS3 and PS2. They lived in the same eco system for years, but this time around that is not going to happen.
