Funny man Charlie Sheen has confirmed that he is HIV positive. Charlie Sheen appeared on TODAY and announced to the world that he contracted the disease in order to remove the stigma surrounding the disease and himself as a person:
I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, threatening the health of so many others that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Charlie Sheen goes on to explain that he has had to pay close to $10 million to keep the news of his positive diagnosis a secret and has decided to come clean in order to make the extortion and blackmail stop, explaining that “I release myself from this prison today“.
The 50-year-old actor goes on to explain that he started having severe headaches and sweating and was hospitalised and test confirmed a positive HIV diagnosis. The actor’s doctor, Dr Robert Huizenga, also appeared with him on TODAY and assured everyone that Charlie Sheen does not have full-blown AIDS and confirmed that “he is healthy“.
Charlie Sheen goes on to admit that he has had unprotected sex since being diagnosed as being HIV positive with two people who he says were aware of the diagnosis and were both under the care of his doctor. He does confirm that he informs every one of his sexual partners about his HIV status before engaging in sexual intercourse with them.
When asked if he knows how he contracted the virus, the actor says that he isn’t entirely sure how he could’ve contracted it. He doesn’t blame his diagnosis for his alcohol and substance abuse and his general erratic behaviour the past few years.
The actor concludes that:
I’m not going to be the poster man for this, but I will not shun away from responsibilities and opportunities that drive me to helping others.
