As much as we have waited for the biggest digital gaming distributors to support our local currency, it could not have come at a worse time than now. As of 10 November, Steam will automatically convert your Dollars into Rands. This will be a permanent move and will stay in Rand whether you are adding funds, buying games, or even being gifted funds from another user.

The reason why this is terrible, is that our Rand is at its weakest it has ever been, let us not forget the digital VAT that came into effect in June. The email that we received notifying us of the news, went as follows:

Dear Steam User,

Steam will soon be priced in South African Rand!

If your Steam wallet has any money in it on November 10th, 2015, your U.S. Dollar balance will be converted to Rand, at a conversion rate dictated by market value at the time of conversion.

To view your account balance, simply log into your Steam client or the Steam website. Once you have logged in, you will see your balance in the upper-right corner next to your account name.

So the Rand rollout on Steam is happening, and soon, so you best take full advantage of the situation before this takes place. In other words, get your Fallout 4 order in before then. If or when Steam will take advantage of the digital VAT, we do not know yet. We do know that the PlayStation Store does and the Xbox Live Marketplace does not. So only time will tell.
