This upgrade is the first major change in Barbie’s basic look in 57 years. And this is a huge step forward in beauty ideals, which many people promoting healthy body image will welcome.
The Barbie brand is a highly successful one, with Mattel raking in $1 billion every year in sales and 92% of American girls between the ages of 3 and 12 have owned their own doll. But the numbers used to be better and the brand had to do something to stay relevant after sales have dropped by 20% between 2012 and 2014.
On top of the cool move by Mattel to promote positive body image, the company has also been on a mission to destroy gender stereotyping amongst young girls. The company even announced that the Barbie Career of the Year for 2016 is Game Developer Barbie, encouraging girls to dream big about their future careers. There is also a Spy Squad, Fashionistas and President and Vice-President range coming out later this year.
