South African artist, Willem Samuel is one talented guy. As a comic book artist, amongst other things, he delivers a flawless and fun style with hints of geek and pop culture references and humour.
He has dedicated much of his work to visual commentary. He has published prolifically in the comic scene, locally and abroad. His work has featured in Laugh it Off Annual, Bitterkomix, Die Swart Kat, Rolling Stone magazine, among others, and Supa Strikas – where he was also Art Director.
He is currently based in the UK where his serialised graphic novel, Mengelmoes, is being published and working as a freelance artist in his spare time.
Willem recently did a campaign for us for our sixth birthday entitled CLICK.
I love stories that shift between reality and fantasy. Our ability as humans to create new dimensions to which we can escape to is amazing to me. The internet is one such world and this commission got me thinking about how cyberspace has become part of my everyday life. Sometimes the world online becomes more real than the world outside my door… and maybe it is. Unlike a book or movie, I can interact with it. There are consequences! This story is very much about escapism, but also about how it plays back to form almost a loop, where the lines between fantasy and reality really become blurred.
After delving into his art we decided to showcase some more pieces from this cool cat artist and will be publishing an image a day on our Instagram page for the next couple of weeks.
Be sure to give us a follow to check out some really sick images created by Willem Samuel himself. Each image tells its own story, with the whole collection giving you a glimpse into Willem’s style and skills.
You can order Mengelmoes at Readers Den Comic shop.
