The Witness can seem a bit intimidating at first, with no explanation of what to do, and no tutorial on any puzzle. But once you get into it and start to think logically, you will be fine. To guide you through the starting points of the game, say up to the desert ruins, we’ve hooked you up with a guide that covers the early segments of your adventure.

Before You Star

Before you go getting yourself all confused, remember these few tips:

  • Do not overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in from of you and all you need to do is the simplest solution.
  • Take your time. There is no rush, if you are stuck on a puzzle, just relax and try again. Things do get tough out there, but the game’s learning curve is manageable.
  • Step away. Often getting stuck is the best part of it. Put your controller down, or simple walk away from the puzzle in front of you and take a walk through the gardens. It is such a beautiful place.
  • Each area houses a new type of puzzle, with every new change of scenery comes a new set of puzzles. Try not to get caught up on what you were dong previously, and think about a new approach to the puzzles ahead.
  • Take notes and pictures.

The first area in the game is pretty simple. The puzzles there just require you to navigate through pathway to the other end. It is really simple. As seen below, just start at one point, and carry on through the maze to get to the other end. You will need to find terminals scattered around this area to unlock the gate ahead. Do the same for each terminal, and the gate will unlock

The second area in the beginning is under a broken green house. It consists of a panel of puzzles, which you need to complete one after the other. Again, pretty simple here, all you need to do is start at one point and travel along the path, but make sure you cross over every black dot, and then proceed to the end. See below for the first puzzle.

Just to the left of the greenhouse you will see another panel of puzzles. These two parts, one being the greenhouse and the other being the orchard, are important to understanding the different types of puzzles you might encounter later on.

Whenever you see black and white dots, you need to make sure that you isolate them and then proceed to the end. This is a bit tricky at first, but practice makes perfect.

The Witness

The next area revolves around symmetry. As you control one point on the board the other point will follow in the same suit. It might take some getting used to, but it is really simple. Check out one of the solutions below

Just after the Boat House you will be led to an island where you will be tested on all the above puzzles, but built into one design. Here you will need to make use of symmetry, and the black dots in which you need to go over with your line to complete the puzzle. The game eases you into this pretty easily, so by the time you are on your last panel, you will be a master at it.

Although pretty simple, the puzzles in the pink forest are genius.  Take a look below:

Here you will need to use the game’s beautiful lighting to try to solve the puzzles ahead. The panels have no sign of symmetry or black dots, so you will need to find another way to make this work. The trick here is to get the perfect lighting on each panel. As the sun reflects off the panel’s surface, you will see the pattern on it kind of burnt into the surface. Remember what you saw, and replicate it on the path. As you get deeper into the ruins, these puzzles get harder as there is less light to make use of. Just always remember to try to get some sort of position so you can easily see the pattern when the light hits it.

The Witness

The Quarry is all about isolation. You need to make sure to quarantine black dots from white dots  in your puzzles. The best way to go about this is to make sure that a white dot is always separated by a line, so that it is never parallel with a black dot. Check the solution out below.
