Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. NASA has confirmed that astronauts heard some kind of space music or sounds during a moon mission.

Astronauts were orbiting the far or dark side of the moon in 1969 when the crew started to hear strange music-like sounds. During the Apollo 10’s moon orbit as a test run for Apollo 11’s moon landing, the astronauts heard something quite eery, with official documents recording the conversation:

Boy, that sure is weird music. That music even sounds outer-spacey. You hear that? That whistling sound? Sounds like, you know, outer-space type music. Well, that sure is weird music.

This happened during an hour long communication interruption with Earth when the space craft reached the far side of the moon. What they hear completely flabbergasted them and they had no way of explaining it.

This information has only recently been released by NASA as the transcript of the astronauts’ entire conversation during this communication interruption used to be classified. The transcript of the conversation was only later revealed when NASA released it into archives in 2008. Now the audio has been released as part of the Science Channels NASA’s Unexplained Files series.

So what is this weird space music? According to the series space makes many sounds continually and isn’t silent as usually portrayed in movies. These sounds could be caused by many different space objects or occurrences like charged particles coming into contact with a planet’s magnetic field. However, the moon has no atmosphere and no magnetic field. NASA engineers and controllers have come up with theories of their own, but the sounds remain a mystery:
