We’ve had some time to spend with the latest device from Fitbit called the Fitbit Blaze.

Fitbit Blaze

This is the company’s first major attempt at making its devices work well as fitness trackers and look good as timepieces. We dare say that it has been able to achieve that with the Fitbit Blaze.

Setup

The setup is extremely straightforward, quick and easy.

All you need to do is head on over to the GooglePlay Store or iTunes and download the free Fitbit app. Once you’ve entered your basic personal information you can start pairing your device with your smartphone. The entire process can be done within 20 min and you can start using your Fitbit.

Design

It has a simple and durable design. The display is big though and if you have smaller wrists the screen will take up lots of space on your arm.

The Fitbit Blaze has a modular design, consisting of two parts – the strap with encasing and the device itself. The device is really easy to clip in and out of the strap meaning you can mix and match your device with different straps for different occasions.

The design has fitness and an active lifestyle in mind, but does’t substitute aesthetics for functionality. The materials used are lightweight and ensure that the device fits securely throughout the day and that you even forget that it’s silently tracking away in the background. The display is big enough and uncluttered to enable you to quickly glance at your progress throughout the day or even during an intense workout.

Thanks to its sleek and simple design, the device doubles as a stylish timepiece which easily fits into your personal style. The entire device screams simplicity, while maintaining a futuristic look that would compliment many different outfits without clashing.

Fitbit Blaze

It must be said that the design isn’t as flashy as other smartwatches on the market. It follows a less cluttered and uncomplicated look which stands out less than other devices. People are less likely to notice the device on your wrist that for instance if you were wearing an Apple Watch. But if you’re into the simplified look, you’ll love the Fitbit and you’ll also like its lightweight feel. At first glance the device doesn’t seem suitable for sleeping but if you’re ultra dedicated to tracking everything about your health you can keep it on while you sleep thanks to its flat and lightweight design.

Performance

In order to get the full experience from your Fitbit Blaze, you’re able to download the free Fitbit app for Android or iPhone and link your device with your smartphone. What’s great about the Fitbit Blaze is that it runs Fitbit’s own OS and can be linked to both devices that run Android and iPhones running on iOS. The setup is simple and quick and before you know it you’re ready to hit the ground running (literally).

If you’re looking for a fitness tracker then you’ll want to seriously consider the Fitbit Blaze. As mentioned, it has been designed with fitness in mind and fits comfortably and securely on your wrist. It automatically tracks the steps you take, stairs you climb, heart rate and captures your sleep data. The data seems to be pretty accurate and you’ll soon become obsessed with getting fit and keeping up and even beating your fitness goals.

You can also track your exercises and get stats on your heart rate and progress mid-exercise. If you’re not too sure on which exercises to do you can use a pre-installed Fitbit app called Fitstar. Fitstar gives you exercise suggestions and exercise programs and tracks your fitness progress each time you perform a particular exercise or complete a program. These exercise programs are fun and challenging and you’ll soon find new and creative ways to get and stay fit with your Fitbit Blaze.

We love that the device tracks your heart rate all day long, providing you with useful health feedback on your resting heart rate and the most active times of day.

The Fitbit Blaze comes in four watch faces and the device has the ability to receive smart notifications like texts, incoming calls, your daily fitness progress, alarms as well as important calendar events and reminders.

The screen has a soft glow which doesn’t provide too much glare, but it’s also very easy to read data in bright lighting conditions. This is great for those fitness enthusiasts who love to take their training outside.

The display is very responsive and comes on automatically when you raise your wrist and shuts off automatically as well. The touch screen works well and it feels natural and seamless to swipe through the device.

Battery Life

In terms of smartwatch battery life, you won’t get better than the Fitbit Blaze. During our review we used it heavily and it could easily go four days without needing to be charged. This blows some of the competitor smartwatches’ battery life out of the water, with the Apple Watch needing to be charged daily for instance.

Verdict

With so many fitness trackers and smartwatches on the market, the Fitbit Blaze has some stiff competition. In fact, there are even so many different Fitbit devices to choose from that it can become difficult to choose one that fits your needs.

Fitbit Blaze

The Fitbit Blaze has some standout features that are worth considering when you’re in the market to buy a fitness tracker. It has a sleek and stable design, incredible battery life, cool fitness features as well as smart notifications that set it apart from other standard fitness trackers.

You can pick up your own Fitbit Blaze for R3 999.00 at most major retailers, including iStore, Incredible Connection, Dion Wired, Makro, Dischem, Clicks, Sportsmans Warehouse, Totalsports, Cape Union Mart and Due South.
