In a first for a South African app, Gumtree announces that it has been testing out Facebook’s Account Kit.
Facebook’s Account Kit was announced at Facebook’s F8 developers conference which has been taking place this week. This Account Kit allows users to sign into third-party apps without needing to enter their passwords. All users need is a mobile phone and a mobile number. If you use this option to sign into an app you will be sent an SMS which contains a unique code giving users access to the third-party app without having to enter a password or sign into their Facebook accounts.
Gumtree, the South African retail app, was the first South African app to test out Account Kit from Facebook and was part of the first 20 apps in the world as well. Gumtree’s South African Manager, Johan Nel stated that the company has a Californian-based development team who are working hard together with Facebook to have the service running soon. Nel goes on to explain that:
[W]e put great emphasis on simplifying trading on Gumtree.co.za and we believe this new technology will do just that. [Gumtree] was excited and honoured to play a pioneering role with Facebook in this process.
