Jani, from Helsinki apparently discovered back in March of this year that he could delete any comments on the popular Facebook-owned photo-sharing app. He explained that by simply typing malicious code into the comments section on the app opened a massive Instagram security flaw. This flaw essentially allowed you to wipe anything on the photo-sharing app. Jani went on to explain that there was no limit to what he could delete using this Instagram security flaw. He told Iltalehti that he “would have been able to eliminate anyone, even Justin Bieber“.
After discovering the flaw, Jani contacted Instagram through its Facebook bug bounty program alerting the company to the flaw. Jani told Iltalehti that the company responded to his report within two days to thank him for alerting it to the security flaw. Instagram went on to say that the flaw had been rectified and as a thank you for the young coder’s help the company gave him $10 000.
Jani and his twin brother have been interested in coding for some time now and have been working hard at discovering security flaws. The brothers have only found minor bugs and flaws in the past which haven’t earned them any money. This is the first time the brothers have earned money for their efforts and Jani has no intention of slowing down, saying that he dreams of becoming a security expert.
It would be my dream job. Security is really important.
