We first heard about this new Polynesian Disney princess back in 2014 and now we finally get our first look at Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) in the teaser for the fantasy Disney movie by the same name:

Moana follows the life of well, Moana, who goes on a quest to find and meet the demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) to save her people. This first teaser of the new Disney princess story focusses on the character of Maui. The teaser, narrated by Johnson, asks “Do you know who Maui is?” and explains that he is:

Only the greatest demigod in all the Pacific Islands. With his magical fish-hook, he slowed down the sun, pulled islands out of the sea, battled monsters..

We’re then treated to an impressive and very expressive dance and chant session by the massive MauiMoana and her pet pig are left, um, speechless after the performance.

We love that Moana looks fierce and powerful. This new Disney princess is more reminiscent of Mulan than Ariel for instance and we’re excited to learn more about who Moana is.

About Moana

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”) and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
