This year’s Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro and pop star Katy Perry decided to record a song to celebrate the global sporting event. The pop star has become known for her powerful and motivational ballads like Roar and Firework and her new Olympic Games song, Rise, carries that style over. The star took to Twitter to release the song, along with an uplifting message of unity.

The star went on to explain why she released the Olympic Games song.

This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite … I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together.

Katy Perry joins the likes of Freddie Mercury, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Muse who have all created an Olympic Games song.

This year’s Olympic Games will take place from 05 August 2016 until 21 August 2016 and will feature athletes from countries around the world.
