We recently celebrated these tiny pictures with World Emoji Day. As part of recognising popular emojis, Twitter released a map setting out the most popular emojis used by certain countries.

The most popular of these little pictures seem to be pretty positive all-around, which is nice to see. South Africans’ favourite emoji to use is the Praise Hands emoji.

Popular Emojis

It is interesting to see what the emotional state of certain countries are based on the most used emojis on Twitter. Canada and the United States of America are pretty tired judging by the most popular emojis used being the Tired Face emoji. The United Kingdom also favours the Tired Face emoji. France, Saudi Arabia Italy, Japan and South Korea are all feeling the love, with love-themed popular emojis. Countries like Columbia, Brazil and Argentina prove that they have swaying hips with a music symbol being the most popular emojis used.

Emoji Science

Emojis are (ironically) huge at the moment and are widely used by everyone to communicate digitally. These tiny pictures that express our emotions have become pop culture hits, with an emoji even being the word of the year in 2015. That particular emojis was the Face-With-Tears-Of-Joy emoji. Emojis have even been used to explain complex science principles or to tell the story behind the popular new Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie.

We have also recently learned that these little pictures are getting their own movie. It was revealed that the movie’s storyline will centre solely around emojis.

Inside your phone, there’s a secret world– and we enter through the text app where we discover Emoji Valley, where the industrious Emoji live and work.

Spotify, the music streaming app, has signed a deal with Sony Pictures Animation to tie directly into the plot of the movie to feature as a mobile app.
