Disney Motion Pictures

Disney Africa highlighted its upcoming films set for release in the next 16 months. These films included some classics, as well as out all-time favourite Star Wars films.

Queen of Katwe

The biggest film in our opinion is the upcoming Queen of Katwe, which is based off a true story of a young girl, Phiona Mutesi , who is raised in the rural streets of Uganda. She stumbles across the game of chess and goes onto winning multiple awards across the world. The movie was filmed on location in Uganda, as well as in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Beauty and the Beast

Lets us not forget Disney’s upcoming live action film Beauty and the Beast, which we got to see a clip of Ms Pots, voiced by Emma Thompson, singing the classic tune from the film. Beauty and the Beast stars Emma Watson as Belle. The film is out in April 2017.

Moana

If anything, Moana looks like it could be the spiritual successor to Inside Out. Think of Lilo and Stitch, with Dwayne Johnson. The film follows Moana, who sails out to save her people from a unfortunate fate.

Rogue One

This December we will get to watch the Star Wars movie that will bridge the gap between Star Wars: Episode III, and Star Wars: Episode IV. The movie follows the story of a group of agents as they plot to steal the plans of the Death Star. Expect lots of pew-pews and few Jedis as Rogue One will focus on the rebellion more than anything else.

Doctor Strange

The latest Marvel film will not be Captain America, or Spider-Man, rather Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange. After a horrific car accident, he discovers a hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales

Johnny Depp returns in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean, as he has to face a dark past. The film is said to show off his origin story as little bit more, and he sets forth to find the Trident of Poseidon, but danger lurks as a man sick on revenge hunts him down.

Disney Channel and Disney Junior

Disney Africa showed off some pretty impressive stats on its current channels on DSTV. Disney Junior reaches over 787 000 kids everyday, with the average age of 4-14.

MILES FROM TOMORROWLAND - "Blasteroid!" - The Callistos discover a tiny race of creatures living inside an oncoming asteroid. This episode of "Miles from Tomorrowland" premieres on Friday, August 07 (9:00 AM - 9:30 AM ET/PT) on Disney Junior. (Disney Junior) ADORBI

Disney Africa revealed new upcoming shows, some of which will be receiving their second and third seasons. The Lion Guard, Sofia the First, and a premier of a brand new show called Elana of Avalor, which will target a younger audience.

Disney XD will be home to a brand new Spider-Man show based on the Marvel character, and this 26-episode show will showcase the Marvel universe and Spider-Man in a new light.  LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, is a brand new show based in the Star Wars universe, but instead of a traditional Star Wars setting, expect to see the show in a LEGO theme, with all the humour and characters we love.

KION

Disney Cookabout is a locally produced show which sees 5 young South Africans compete in the kitchen and out in the world as they gather ingredients to please the judges. The show has been a massive success locally according to Disney Africa, when it premiered on 5 August 2016 on SABC. The show will be hitting Disney channel on DSTV in October.

Overall Disney Africa confident that it will continue to grow in Africa.
