If you haven’t heard about Pokémon GO yet, then what have you been doing with your life? The mobile game which sees Trainers (as players are called) run around trying to catch virtual Pokémon, has become a global pop-culture hit. Certain fans just love the franchise so much that they have started with choosing Pokémon baby names for their children.
BabyCentre reports that it has seen a recent and sudden increase in Pokémon baby names on its databases since the launch of the popular mobile game. The site’s databases found that Pokémon baby names like Evee moved up 1 394 spots from last year and Onyx moved up 2 191. The most popular amongst the Pokémon baby names is Roselia which moved up 5 896 spots since last year.
Parents aren’t giving their children Pokémon names for nothing, with the site’s surveys showing that 50% of the moms and dads in BabyCentre play the popular Pokémon GO mobile game. The site’s Global Editor-in-Chief explains why Pokémon baby names have become so popular all of a sudden:
Parents are always looking to pop culture for baby name inspiration and, right now, it doesn’t get hotter than Pokémon GO. It’s possible that parents’ enthusiasm for the game will reignite their love for the brand and spark a full-fledged naming trend.
Naming children after pop-culture phenomenon is nothing new. Fans of music, TV shows, movies and video games have paid homage to their favourite franchises by naming their children after them. Pokémon is arguably one of the biggest pop-culture franchises out there. With the popularity of Pokémon GO resurrecting the franchise, fans are sure do some creative things to show how much they love everything Pokémon. We’re just not so sure about giving your children Pokémon baby names like Geodude or GigglyPuff as they will have to live with these Pokémon baby names forever.
