With the world still completely enthralled with the massively addictive mobile game, Pokémon GO, a Pokemon movie was bound to happen. It has now been confirmed that the Pokemon movie will be released by Universal Pictures and will enter production in 2017.
No official plot has been revealed, other than that the Pokemon movie will be based on the Great Detective Pikachu video game which was released earlier this year in Japan. This sweet video game introduces a brand-new talking Pikachu who is different to the rest of his yellow kind. This peculiar Pikachu teams up with a boy called Tim Goodman to solve Pokémon mysteries.
We also know that the Pokemon movie will be a live-action adaptation of the popular Pokémon franchise, which has gotten a re-awakening after the release of Pokémon GO.
We weren’t surprised to learn that Legendary Entertainment had secured the rights to a Pokemon movie, seeing as the entire world is stuck to their smartphone’s screens, trying to catch ‘em all. Pokémon GO hasn’t even released world wide yet, but it already has everyone obsessed with everything Pokémon. A Pokemon movie was only bound to happen and we hope with writers Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor) and Alex Hirsch on board, we’re hopefully in for a good film adaptation.
A Pokemon movie is long overdue with the Pokémon franchise first being introduced in Japan back in 1996. Since then, 279 million Pokémon video games have been sold worldwide, 21.5 billion Pokémon cards have been distributed and the animated Pokémon TV show powered on for 19 seasons.
