It has been a while since we PS4 owners really got anything worthwhile in terms of our software updates. Microsoft releases periodic updates, while Sony, not so much. The PS4, being half way through its life-cycle, will be getting the same treatment as the PS3 did back in the day with the latest PS4 Firmware 4.0.
The new update will bring brand new ways to explore your PS4, with folders, a new overlay menu, and a sparkly theme. Yes, the same one that was on the PS3. Here are all the new details for PS4 Firmware 4.0, and some pics to show off what you can look forward to when PS4 Firmware 4.0 goes live next month.
Although it is still maintaining the classic XMB layout, PS4 Firmware 4.0 will bring about a new UI that will come with some new popup notifications, a brand new sparkly background, and new system icons. In general, expect the UI to be smoother, and cleaner, with a new polished look and feel.
Sony has worked hard on bringing a new menu to the PS4 overlay, which will let you perform actions without actually leaving a game. PS4 Firmware 4.0 introduces a pop-up menu which will give you some new options while in an app, and to access certain features while playing a game.
Like the Quick Menu, the new Share Menu introduced by PS4 Firmware 4.0 will also be the same, and only take up a portion on the screen. This will let you start a recording, upload a clip, or even begin streaming without actually ever leaving your game. PS4 Firmware 4.0 will also bring adjustments to uploading to Twitter, which will now see an increase from a 10 second clip, to a 140 second clip.
Probably the biggest requested feature, apart from external hard drive support, is the ability to add folders on your menu, and organise games into them. PS4 Firmware 4.0 will bring just that. You will be able to arrange games into specific folders, as well as name them. A new feature will be available with PS4 Firmware 4.0 that will let you show and hide purchased content on your UI. This will allow you to download the games and content from this new PS4 Firmware 4.0 feature.
The new update lets you reveal the content of a Hidden Trophy. By default the trophy will be hidden, but you will now be able to choose to show the content, or hide it.
Other improvements include the ability to add a background image to your profile, and also compare trophies with another player directly from your profile. PS4 Firmware 4.0 will be in beta starting this week, and it will be live sometime in the coming week to the general public.
