A new study looked at which smartphones deliver good signal strength when operated on weak connections.
The study was conducted by the Aalborg University in Denmark and assessed, with the help of telecom authorities in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway, how 26 smartphones performed on weak connections. The study primarily focussed on the antenna performance to see how well the smartphone maintains radio coverage where good signal strength is hard to come by.
The test used by the study to determine good signal strength in smartphones is often referred to as the antenna test. The study found that the main difference between smartphones when it comes to good signal strength is the design of the antennas in combination with how the smartphone is held by the user.
Interestingly the study found that good signal strength depends strongly on the antenna in the smartphone and on the way the user holds the smartphone to her head face during voice calls or in her hands during browsing. It was also found that good signal strength is achieved better through hands-free modes as the smartphones are then free from any close by objects (like your face) interfering with good signal strength.
The study concluded that from the 26 smartphones tested that the Microsft’s Lumia 640 phone delivered the best performance under weak radio signal conditions. Have a look at the rest of the results, with the study finding that the Xiaomi Mi5, Samsung Galaxy J1, DORO PhoneEasy 530X and the Huawei Y360 had the worst performance when there was no good signal strength.
It is interesting that the study found that the older Galaxy S6 Edge+ performed better under weak radio signal condition than newer Samsung Galaxy models. The more affordable Apple iPhone SE also performed better than the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s models.
