Final Fantasy XV takes place in a world called Eos. The world is divided into three kingdoms, namely Tenebrae, Niflheim, and Lucis. Each kingdom once housed a magical crystal which granted them power over the lands. Lucis however, is the last kingdom to have its crystal intact. The crystal grants the people under the King’s order, magical powers, and the King makes this possible by the power of his ring called the Ring of the Lucis.
King Regis is the ruler of Lucis in Final Fantasy XV. The King, along with his child Noctis, the protagonist of Final Fantasy XV, are visiting Tenebrae. This is after King Regis seeks healing, following a Maralith attack. During his visit to Tenebrae, the kingdom falls under attack by Niflheim, the only kingdom that is power hungry enough to wage war against the other two kingdoms. Niflheim has no crystal, so they depended on the power of Magiteck and demons to wage war against the other kingdoms. Apart from that, the kingdom is run by a mad ruler, who after the takeover of Tenebrae, captured princess Lunafreya. As she was captured, she and her brother Ravus watched their mother die by the hands of General Glauca, a mad general of the Niflheim army. To make the day even worse, Noctis and his father King Regis, did nothing to stop the attack, hence Ravus blaming the King for the death of his mother.
Tenebrae in turn fell under control of Niflheim. With the queen dead, and Lunafreya too young to rule, the kingdom was easy enough for Niflheim to take over. Now that Niflheim have control over Tenebrae, they set their eyes on the last standing kingdom, Lucis, and in turn the last remaining magic crystal. Lunafreya has only survived this long due to her power as an Oracle. Oracles are sacred people who can communicate with the Gods and keep them from turning the world upside down. They can also call forth Astrals, which in theory are the summons in Final Fantasy XV. These Astrals are guardians of the planet, and they will do anything to protect it from harm in Final Fantasy XV.
Princess Lunafreya is at peace with her mother’s passing, but her brother on the other hand is not. 12 years pass between the takeover of Tenebrae, and now Revus, who is still mad, joins the Niflheim army to exact revenge on King Regis and take over the kingdom and the crystal. In the present day, Lucis is under constant threat from Niflheim, and thanks to the power of the crystal, the kingdom manages to defend itself from the ongoing threat. The Lucis kingdom is being held together by King Regis and his ability to use the magic of the crystal thanks to the Ring of the Lucis. All these attacks on the city have taken its toll on the king, weakening his powers, and causing premature aging. The more he uses the ring, the weaker he has become. Although he can give the ring to anyone to use, only the Gods decide who is fit to wear it and grant power. Those who aren’t deemed fit, will burn alive.
King Regis sees no other way around this but to surrender the Kingdom of Lucis to Niflheim and sign a peace treaty. There are conditions however, he wants Noctis and Lunafreya to marry, and he wants all Lucian lands outside of Insomnia, the capital city of Lucis, to be handed over to Niflheim. Although the people of Lucis are not happy, the events start to unfold in the kingdom to sign the treaty. King Regis sends Noctis out to meet up with his future wife Lunafreya. Noctis leaves Insomnia with his 3 bodyguards who are:
Ignis Sceintia: Noctis’s childhood friend acting as a strategist for the royal family. He is the drive and chef in the game
Gladiolus Amicitia: Noctis’s childhood friend and active bodyguard. His entire family line has always protected the royal Regis royal family
Prompto Agentum: Prompto is the easy-going friend of Noctis. He has known him since they were teenagers, and would kill for him. He is the guy that always has his smartphone out to take photos. His ability to take cool pictures will come in handy in the game as you can photograph everything.
Although Noctis has left to meet Luna, she arrives in Insomnia along with the Emperor of Niflheim, Iedolas Aldercapt, Ardyn Izunia, General Glauca, and her brother Ravus. The only two people we have not spoken about before is the Emperor of Nifilheim Iedolas Aldecapt, and Ardyn Izunia, who is the Emperor’s advisor and right hand. What seemed to be a peace treaty, turned out to be bloodshed as Luna was kidnapped and used in a plot to terminate members of the Kingsglaive, a group of loyal soldiers who have been granted powers. By eliminating the royal guards, the place is left vulnerable, and the crystal with it too. It is now that King Regis realizes that the real plan was to steal the crystal from Lucis, and lower the defence of the city so Niflheim can take it by force. While General Glauca is being a terrible person and keeping the remainder of the Kingsglaive busy, the Niflheim managed to seize the crystal.
It does not end there however, as Ravus, Luna’s brother, being power hungry puts on the Ring of Lucis, burning himself to almost death. General Glauca catches up to King Regis, who is now trying to flee the kingdom safely and just before Glauca can obtain the ring from King Regis, he hands it to Luna, and tells her to find Noctis. Glauca then kills King Regis. Luna flees the palace with the last of the Kingsglaive guard Nix, who puts the ring on and trades his life for the power of the Gods for a few hours. After an epic battle, Nix kills Glauca and dies as the Gods predicted. Luna manages to flee Insomnia and heads to Altisia to try and track down Noctis and give him the ring he needs to become king and wield the power of the crystal.
This is where Final Fantasy XV starts, as Noctis and his friends think they are heading out to find Luna, who has already been through so much. Noctis does not know his father is dead, nor that the crystal is in Niflheim’s hands. Without the crystal, the city of Insomnia is in dire need for protection. As the city falls under the control of Niflheim, and the evil men behind the plot to steal the crystal become more powerful, Noctis cannot do anything but stay away, as security is tight throughout Eos now that Niflheim controls all the kingdoms. The Emperor Iedolas Aldercapt is still after the ring. Without the ring in, the power of the crystal is useless. The former kingdom of Lucis is under the control of Niflheim , and they all believe that both King Regis and Prince Noctis died during the invasion. What more can go wrong right?
With Final Fantasy XV releasing soon, and the events all in line for the story to pick up, we cannot wait to see what happens to Noctis and his friends. Is General Glaucus really dead in Final Fantasy XV? Did Ravus burn to death while trying to wear the Ring of Lucis? All will be answered when Final Fantasy XV hits shelves on 29 November for PS4, and Xbox One.
