Your parents may have told you that you can’t make a living from playing video game, but that’s no longer strictly true, says Claire Cobbledick, Head of Marketing for Gumtree South Africa. She explains that the most expensive listing was for a Pokemon GO account in the United States. For a fee of $999,999, the player would catch any Pokémon the buyer would require of them.

While this is a fairly new trend in South Africa, the sale of online gaming profiles (“the imaginary economy”) is thriving. For some gamers in countries like China and Korea, it’s a full-time profession. The classified site has recently seen an uptick in the sale of gaming profiles, being sold online.
The gaming profile or Pokemon GO account requirements vary from seller to seller. For epic online games such as League of Legends, the gamer would typically sell their login and passwords. For level-based games such as Candy Crush, the buyer would provide their login and password to a gamer who would help them get through the trickier levels for a free. Other games will allow you to sell tokens and add-ons within the game, such as weapons or armor.
Cobbledick says that League of Legends is the most popular account for sale on Gumtree, with prices typically ranging from R500 to R800, depending on the player’s achievement. An account recently went up for sale with close to 100 characters, for R1000.
We don’t have many professional gamers selling their profiles or a Pokemon GO account, but there are a few hardcore gamers who’ve grown tired of it and would rather sell their profile than delete it. After all, countless hours of work go into gaming – why let it go to waste?
Cobbledick says that there are a few criteria you should consider before buying someone else’s gaming or Pokemon GO account.
Carefully read the description. Make sure it’s the correct game and server, and check which specific items will be included in the sale.
Newbies shouldn’t try to buy a profile or Pokemon GO account off the bat.
Spend a little time familiarizing yourself with the game. That way you know what you are buying, and that you will enjoy playing it going forward.
Cobbledick also advises buyers to make sure that you receive everything promised in the advert – including the recovery question answer, right account name and password.
You don’t want to pay for something and find yourself locked out when that person decides to go back and change their password.
Likewise, if you want to sell your gaming or Pokemon GO account, be very specific about what the person will be receiving with it, including items included. Provide all of the information that person will require, including the registration key, passwords and recovery question/answer. Make sure that your login and password is unique and not used for another profile of yours.
Cobbledick says that she suspects a lot more professional gamers will cash in on their profiles in the near future.
Games are becoming epic – which means you can spend years playing. And while some of us would prefer to take the long route to catching them all, others don’t want the hassle of building up momentum. If you are willing to pay for it, you can definitely skip straight to “good parts” of any game.
