Fans of the popular HBO show, Game of Thrones, finally have a premier date for the penultimate season 7 – 16 July 2017. Now, it has been revealed by showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss at the SXSW film festival in Texas that pop musician, Ed Sheeran will be starring in the new season of Game of Thrones.

Ed Sheeran confirmed the news via his Twitter account by Tweeting that “guess the cat’s out the bag“.

No further details were revealed during the panel discussion, which included on-screen sisters, Maisie Williams (portrays Arya Stark) and Sophie Turner (portrays Sansa Stark). Apparently, Maisie Williams is a big fan of Ed Sheeran and was delightfully surprised by the news that he will be a fellow cast member in the upcoming and second-last season of the popular show based on the books by George R.R. Martin. The showrunners said that they have tried for years to get Ed Sheeran on Game of Thrones as a surprise for Maisie Williams, and now finally it will happen.

Ed Sheeran won’t be the first musician to be making an appearance on Game of Thrones. Drummer of Coldplay, Will Champion made an appearance during the now infamous Red Wedding episode in season 3. Earlier in season 3, Snowpatrol lead singer, Gary Lightbody made an appearance as a soldier. Season 5 of Game of Thrones featured Bill Kelliher, Brent Hinds, and Brann Dailor – members of Maston – as Wildlings. The full Of Monsters And Men band appeared in season 6 in the Bloody Hand episode where Arya Stark watches play.

Not only will season 7 and season 8 be the two final seasons of Game of Thrones, but it was also confirmed that season 8 will be the shortest too. It will only run for 6 episodes each, as opposed to the usual 10-episode seasons Game of Thrones have delivered previously.

Are you a fan of Game of Thrones or Ed Sheeran or both? Which role would you like to see Ed Sheeran play in season 7 of Game of Thrones?
