If you were a kid in the 90s (and some adults too) then you probably managed to convince your parents that getting one would teach you responsibility. These egg-shaped virtual pets were released in 1996 and came in many different colours and types. You were tasked with feeding, exercising, socialising, loving, and generally taking care of your virtual pet around the clock. We all loved to play with our virtual pets until we go over it and let it die somewhere in a drawer or along with other old toys in a box.
Now, Tamagotchi is making a comeback in Japan. Bandai, the original maker of the Tamagotchi, is releasing the product in the original six characters. Tamagotchi is available for purchase through Amazon in Japan for 2000 Yen (about R250).
Tamagotchi has become a pop culture classic and everyone who is into nostalgic tech and toys remember owning one. In fact, Tamagotchi is so popular that more than 76 million of these virtual pets have been sold since it hit the market in the 90s. If Pokémon GO could enjoy so much success after it relauched the Pokémon franchise, then Tamagotchi might be very successful in a market that loves 90s nostalgia.
Since its original release, Tamagotchi has had many different versions and ways to play, but this is the first time that the original “digital portal pet” is relaunched.
