Pikachu has always had his own way of cutely communicating with his best pal and trainer, Ash Ketchum and other Pokémon they meet along the way. But this adorable, and arguably most popular Pokémon of them all has had a limited vocabulary, basically consisting of variations of his name. For the first time in Pokémon history, Pikachu speaks English in the latest trailer for the upcoming Pokémon movie.

Fans were audibly surprised when all of a sudden Pikachu speaks English after Ash asks him why he doesn’t want to get into a PokéBall.

What makes it so weird for fans that Pikachu speaks English in the latest trailer for the upcoming movie, is the fact that he hasn’t spoken since 1997 when he first appeared in the popular TV series.

The voice actor for this beloved character, Kate Bristol, has explained that it was even weird when she found out that Pikachu speaks English in the upcoming TV movie, going on to state that:

“I know a lot of people might think it’s out of the ordinary when Pikachu speaks English. It’s definitely out of the ordinary.

It was hilarious being in the theater with the rest of the cast and hearing the audience’s reaction as a huge collective ‘What?’ rose up.

The new movie, called Pokemon The Movie: I Choose You! has been released in selected theatres around the world. The movie serves as a type of prequel, showing the events leading up to Ash and Pikachu becoming the best friends they are today. The movie is not the first Pokémon movie to be released, but because its the first movie in which Pikachu speaks English, it’s bound to become one that many fans will remember.
