Humans have become increasingly more accepting and open to different types of sexualities. But researchers believe that human sexuality might move into the digital space, with robosexuality seeming like a very true form of futuristic sexual expression.
Robosexuality was a hot topic during a conference called “Love and Sex with Robots” held at Goldsmith University in London. Many experts during the conference believed that robosexuality might become a more acceptable form of sexual expression in the near future. Some experts even discussed the possibility of robosexuality being legally recognised and humans and robots being allowed to get married.
Other experts seem to agree that robosexuality is growing at a very fast pace. David Levy predicted that human-robot marriages could become legal by 2050. Dr. Helen Driscoll, an expert on sexuality and relationships expects robosexuality to grow together with virtual reality and the advancement in sex technology.
As virtual reality becomes more realistic and immersive and is able to mimic and even improve on the experience of sex with a human partner; it is conceivable that some will choose this in preference to sex with a less than perfect human being.
The question of robosexuality is also starting to be explored more via pop culture references. A recent movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, Her, explored robosexuality where humans started to fall in love with their operating systems. An episode of The Big Bang Theory joked about one of the characters falling in love with Apple’s Siri. HBO’s Westworld also explores the idea of robosexuality in detail.
Currently, there are a ton of sex robots on the market, and personal robots have become way more responsive and useful. However, it might still be a while before people would like to legally bind themselves to their circuited significant other.
