Your mom was right – not everything you see in movies and TV is real. Sometimes real product placements take place where real brands are used, usually paid for by the brand owner. Other times, fake brands are created that add to the fictional world created by the movie or TV show. Then you also get territories like Canada that prohibits any type of real product placement in entertainment, meaning that fake brands or no brands always have to be used.
These are some of the famous fake brands you will see often used in some of your favourite movies and TV shows.
This is one of the most recognisable fake brands in entertainment. You can see the logo of this big, fake brand all over many different props in the Looney Tunes franchise.
It might not be one of the best rated fake brands on TV. Oceanic Airlines is the fake airline which usually crashes in shows like Lost, Chuck, JAG and more. Flying with Oceanic Airlines is bound to be a wild ride as everything that could possibly go wrong with fake airline has happened to it like being highjacked or crashing and killing everyone on board.
The Halfling’s Leaf
Grown in the Shire, this pipe-weed brand is enjoyed by many Hobbits and exported across most of Middle-Earth. Gandalf, the iconic wizard, is particularly fond of smoking the Halfling’s Leaf.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has many cool sci-fi fake brands, with Douglas Adams truly creating a fictional universe you can immerse yourself in. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a big book of travel, that morphs into one of the biggest fake brands across the galaxy. In fact, the Guide is one of the most popular fake brands in this franchise that has been around since the late 70s.
Sometimes fake brands are modeled after real products, which seems to be the case for Morley Cigarettes. These made up brand looks very similar to well-known cigarette brand, Marlboro. Everyone in the 90s and 00s in TV shows smoked these. You can see people puffing on these in Beverly Hills 90210, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Heroes, and X-Files.
Nimbus Racing Broom Company
If you want a broomstick, then Nimbus would be your first choice. This is the make that Harry Potter himself chooses to fly with, having owned a Nimbus 2000 and 2001. Other fake brands from the Harry Potter franchise includes many magical sweets like Bertie Bott’s Every Flavoured Beans and wands like Ollivander’s.
Another franchise filled with fake brands is Futurama. Our favourite of the Futurama fake brands is Planet Express. Much of the seven seasons have plots revolving heavily around this intergalactic delivery company.
