We have saved our favourite 5 Netflix originals comedy shows for last. Click here for last weeks list of shows.
Atypical (77% Average Tomatometer but liked by 96% of audiences)
Atypical is a coming of age story that follows Sam (Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum who has decided he is ready for romance (and maybe find love) and independence. While Sam is on his funny yet emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal? The series is created and written by Robia Rashid and Academy Award-winning producer Seth Gordon.
Disjointed (23% Average Tomatometer but an impressive 82% by audiences)
Disjointed is a workplace comedy from Emmy winning creators Chuck Lorre and David Javerbaum. Academy Award winner Kathy Bates plays Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, a lifelong advocate for legalisation who is finally living her dream as the owner of an Los Angeles cannabis dispensary, Ruth’s Alternative Caring. Joining her are three charismatic “budtenders”, her entrepreneurial twenty-something year old son and a very troubled security guard. In addition to Bates, the series stars Tone Bell, Aaron Moten, Elizabeth Alderfer, Dougie Baldwin and Elizabeth Ho. The fact this show hasn’t been renewed is a a bit puzzling.
Friends from College (22% Average Tomatometer but 74% of audiences disagree)
This Netflix Original show revolves around a close-knit group of Harvard alumni now staring down their 40s, experiencing success and the lack thereof at work and at home and navigating their ambitious, clumsy and romantically intertwined lives in New York City.
GLOW (96% Average Tomatometer and 88% by audiences)
Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life turns out not to be what it seems. At the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling super stardom. Guts, glitter, glory… Are you ready to GLOW?
Santa Clarita Diet (79% Average Tomatometer but an impressive 86% by audiences)
Again we have saved the best for last. This one is our favourite Netflix Originals Comedy by far. Renewed for season 3.
Joel (Timothy Oliphant) and Sheila Hammond (Drew Barrymore) are “real-a-tors” (watch the show) leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita, until Sheila goes through a dramatic change (a small matter of Sheila turning into a zombie and starting to crave human flesh) sending both their lives down a road of death and destruction… but in a good way. And they’re absolutely fine.
