Netflix is known for its great original content and its series are some of the best around. From the intense Orange is the New Black to the hilarious Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, we have five great Netflix original series you need to binge-watch at least once a year.
Luke Cage is based off the same Marvel superhero of the same name and set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the third Netflix original series that revolves around The Defenders series and stars Mike Colter as Luke Cage himself. Luke is an ex-convict with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin who sees the wrong in the world and fights crime and corruption. The show is brought to life in New York and filmed in Harlem where Luke’s life as a superhero becomes a reality as he tries to balance the good and bad around him. Of course, across the two seasons, you will see some familiar Marvel faces and dive into all the lore around Luke Cage himself.
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Kidnapped and trapped in a bunker by a doomsday cult, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt tells the story of Kimmy Schmidt who gets saved from the bunker and has to now adjust to life in the real world. Of all the places she could choose to adapt to, she chooses New York City where she meets the fabulous Titus Andromedon. The show has some fantastic comedic undertones with hidden one-liners and great guest appearances from the likes of Tina Fey and Lisa Kudrow. The show is in its fourth season making it 45 episodes for you to sit and watch while you fall in love with the great cast of characters.
Strange Things came out of nowhere and become an instant success. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, the show focuses on a group of kids who try and live a normal life while pretending that their town is not one crazy supernatural phenomenon. This Netflix original series is set in the 1980s so it revolves around some popular 80s pop-culture trends and has an old-school look to it. Even the intro will have chills running down your spine. The first season of the show is creepy as the kids investigate the disappearance of their friend and the second season gets even creepier as the dark forces become a bigger threat. With season 3 releasing next year, Stranger Things makes for a great show to watch now and again in a few months time.
Orange is the New Black
Brought to life by Weeds creator, Jenji Kohan, Orange is the New Black is a series based around the events in Litchfield Penitentiary, a woman-only maximum security prison. The show has become one of the most popular in the US and follows not only Piper’s life in prison but the inmates she meets along the way and their lives and struggles in prison. The show touches on some heavy emotional themes as you learn more about the inmates and their past but also as a viewer you grow fond of them. It has some comedic undertones but mostly it was originally created to try and gain awareness of how woman are treated in prison.
For those of you who live crime dramas then Narcos is right up your alley. Set and filmed in Colombia, the show is based on the story of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and his rise and fall and how he becomes a billionaire distributing cocaine. The show is currently in its third season with the fourth season rebooting the story set in the 1980s. If you love edge-of-your-seat action and betrayal then Narcos is a fantastic Netflix original series to binge watch. It is always great to learn about history’s greatest villains through a well-produced TV series.
