These female gaming characters are not your stereotypical female leads as they kick ass in so many ways, and take names. These female characters came into a world overcrowded with male leads, and made a mark which we still remember today. Here are some of the most important female characters in gaming, and why they should be honoured today.
Lara Croft – Tomb Raider
Lara Croft came from great beginnings, and turned into a humble young woman with a keen sense for adventure, and a fierce attitude for survival. Lara Croft made her first appearance in Tomb Raider back in 1996 as the big breasted bombshell, and took the world by storm. She was known as the sexiest gaming woman around, but things had to change to help her image and to get her away from that sexist lead.
In 2013 Square-Enix rebooted the Tomb Raider franchise with a new remodelled Lara Croft. Not only was she younger, but her character focus was not on her sex-appeal, but rather her vulnerable younger self as she slowly grew into a stronger woman. Lara has gone from being the sexiest female character in gaming, to being one of the most predominant female leads thanks to her character growth and development. Just shows that we really do not need to have the stereotypical female lead to fall in love with a character.
Commander Shepard –Mass Effect 3
We played as a male lead character for two generations until, Mass Effect 3 came along and brought with it the first female lead character. She was a welcomed addition to the game as it not only allowed the gamers to be a bit more diverse with their gameplay, but thanks to the openness of the game’s relationship mechanics, you could have relations with any sex or species.
It was also important for the developers to imagine a female lead without being held back by her feminist nature, thus female Shepard saved the galaxy just like any other male would, without using her sex as a reason for anything.
GLaDOS – Portal
GLaDOS is a robot, but a female one, so she counts okay! GLaDOS first appeared in Portal, and she went on to become one of the most iconic, and twisted, villains we have ever seen in gaming. GLaDOS had a dark humour, but she still managed to keep it fresh and her jokes have become fan favourites. What makes GLaDOS so different is her ability to remain as a female lead, as an antagonist, while still being a robot.
Most female leads are copy and paste off other characters, but GLaDOS proved that you do not need to be human, nor the typical cookie cutter character, to be noticed. GLaDOS managed to captivate players regardless of her appearance, and she did it while trying to kill them too.
Bayonetta, the sexiest, fiercest female lead of today’s games. Bayonetta is the definition of seduction, as she has multiple layers to her which come out at various times in her games. Her over-the-top style, and over-sexualisation, makes Bayonetta one of the most stylish characters today.
Bayonetta does not throw herself around, she is respectable, but flirty at the same time. What makes her so important, is that she manages to stay as an extremely powerful female lead, while still being the feminine female lead we tried to get rid of all those years ago.
Ellie –The Last of Us
Ellie was bitten by a clicker in the game and now has to face the dangers of the world while trying to come to terms with her own possible fate, that she might hold the cure for humanity. As we play the game we come to love Ellie as a character, the way she talks, and the way she turns Joel, who is a hot-headed man, into a loving and kind person.
Ellie proved that you do not need to have the age or sex appeal to make a connection with players. All you need is a strong script and a loving character to make a difference.
