Sports movies can be emotional and exciting at the same time. What makes many of the sports movies so great, is that they shine a spotlight on some of your favourite sports in an entertaining way.

It wouldn’t be a complete list of sports movies if we didn’t include this movie. Rocky is a 1976 boxing movie, featuring Silvester Stallone as boxer, Rocky Balboa. The franchise has grown since then and now features six sequels – Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), Rocky IV (1985), Rockey V (1990), Rocky Balboa (2006) and Creed (2015).

Fever Pitch

Sports movies usually have a lot of heart in them and Fever Pitch is no different. Based on a true story, this 2005 romantic comedy stars Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon.

The Waterboy

Starring funny man, Adam Sandler, this 1996 comedy has a lot of heart and some sports too. But it’s mostly a very lighthearted spin on the sports movie genre. Adam Sandler stars in another funny sports movie, Happy Gilmore, which is about a hockey-player turned golfer.

Jerry Macguire

It’s one of those sports movies that anyone can enjoy. Released in 1996 and starring Tom Cruise as Jerry Macguire, the movie has become classic thanks to its sports theme mixed with comedy, drama and some romance too.

Hansie: A True Story

This is one of the more emotional sports movies. Hansie: A True Story tells the controversial story of the late South African cricket captain, Hansie Cronje.

Bend It Like Beckham

This 2002 British comedy starring Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra shows how sport has a way to break molds and ignite passions.

The Wrestler

This 2008 drama directed by acclaimed director, Darren Aronofsky, features Mickey Rourke as a washed out wrestler struggling to keep relevant. It’s one of the sports movies that shows the darker side of being a professional athlete.


Telling the story of the 1994 Rugby World Cup, Invictus stars some Hollywood heavyweights like Matt Damon (as Francois Pienaar) and Morgan Freeman (as the late and great Nelson Mandela).

Any Given Sunday

It doesn’t get much better than this in terms of sports movies. Starring Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, this 1999 drama is a favourite amongst sports and movie fans alike.

Space Jam

Featuring real life sports star, Michael Jordon, this 1999 movie stars some of our favourite Looney Toons, include Bugs Bunny.
