Video games aren’t cheap to make. Some games, however, cost a little bit more than others to create. Some expensive video games even have bigger budgets than big blockbuster movies. Take a look at the most expensive video games that have ever been made.
All these expensive video games cost more than $50 million to make. The prices for the most expensive video games listed below has inflation included. Keep in mind that there could be games that cost more to make but their budgets are locked behind bolt and key so we will never know the true cost.
APB: All Points Bulletin
Budget: R1.5 Billion
At number 10 is an open world multiplayer shooter game known as ABP. This was one of EA’s pet projects and a new IP for the developer when it released back in 2010. The game had an urban setting where two factions, the Enforcers and the Criminal carried out missions against each other. The game mainly consisted of two teams fighting each other while each team was trying to complete their objective. EA began development of the game in 2005 and five years later it cost R1.5 billion to make. The game recieved average reviews and in 2017 it re-released for PS4 and Xbox One.
Red Dead Redemption
Budget: R1.6 billion
While we are sure that 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 will cost almost double the original’s cost to develop, R1.6 billion is a lot of money to spend on a game. Even though that is just peanuts for Take-Two and Rockstar, the original Red Dead Redemption was a mammoth of a game to develop. The team consisted of more than 800 people including the best of the best of Rockstar’s San Diego team. Development of the game began in 2004 and it took over five years to bring the game to life on PS3 and Xbox 360.
Max Payne 3
Budget: R1.7 billion
Fear not, this is not the last Rockstar game on this list. Max Payne 3 was a bigger and better game than the sequel, which meant it had a bigger budget too. It set Rockstar back R1.7 billion when it was in development, which might be due to multiple delays in release.
Budget: R1.7 billion
While Too Human cost an arm and a leg to develop it was unfortunately not the best game ever released on the Xbox 360. Developed by Silicon Knights, Too Human was an Xbox 360 exclusive that was in development for over ten years. That could explain the crazy high budget cost. While the game was meant to release on the PS2, GameCube and Xbox it never made it to any of those platforms due to Microsoft buying the rights to the game in 2005.
Budget: R1.8 billion
When Destiny was initially announced there were rumours that the game had a total budget of $500 million which was not the case. In the end, it set Activision back $150 million with Destiny 2 probably costing a little more. This amount of money was necessary to make sure Destiny was a new type of game with a new type of genre that merged MMO and FPS into one experience and Bungie and Activision successfully did what they set out to do.
Final Fantasy VII – R1.9 Billion
Budget: R1.9 billion
Some may argue that Final Fantasy VII is the greatest in the series and while that may be true or not it was also the most expensive one to make of all time. While its initial cost of development was only $45 million if you add the marketing budget of $100 million and inflate that to meet 2018’s standards you are looking at a game that cost anything between $150 to $220 million dollars today. That is a lot of money but if you ask us it was completely warranted given that Final Fantasy VII is without a doubt the most popular one in the series today.
Grand Theft Auto V
Budget: R3.3 billion (What??)
GTA V cost a fortune to develop and you can see why in the game. Its gorgeous open world, awesome story and deep online mode make for the best GTA in the series and Rockstar knew it would so it spent all the money on the planet developing the game. With over 80 million copies sold across PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC, and countless in-game purchases too, Rockstar had a massive return on investment.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – R3.5 Billion
Budget: R3.5 billion
Last but not least we have Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which was the biggest and most expensive game Activision ever funded. Released in 2009, the game was the sequel to Modern Warfare and was the sixth instalment in the series. One main reason why it cost so much money was due to the use of the new in-house IW 4.0 Game Engine that claimed to be the most powerful ever created. Modern Warfare 2 has gone down to be the best Call of Duty in the series and without a doubt the best payoff for Activision.
