Last week, the first teaser trailer for Game of Thrones 8 was released and the world exploded and then imploded, and then burst into flames. The fandom for Game of Thrones 8 couldn’t be bigger, with huge hype surrounding this final season of the popular HBO show.
With the first teaser trailer out, we need to find out what it all means before the final season is unleashed in April 2019.
Here’s everything we learned from the teaser trailer for Game of Thrones 8.
Fire and Ice
So, seeing as it features heavily throughout – fire and ice are central themes for Game of Thrones 8.
The teaser trailer literally has a chilling start – everything is seen to be engulfed in a frosty mist. A wolf and a dragon are swallowed by the ice.
The scene shifts and we’re shown fire instead of ice. The fire sets a lion ablaze.
The two forces – fire and ice- meet in a dramatic clash, which leaves behind what appears to be Dragonglass.
So what does all of this mean?
The wolf, dragon, and lion all obviously symbolize the key contenders for the Iron Throne:
- Wolf = Stark;
- Dragon = Targaryen; and
- Lion = Lannister.
The ice only covers the wolf and the dragon (the lion is engulfed by the fire). When the fire and the ice meet they form (what appears to be) Dragonglass. This is the only known substance (other than Valyrian steel) that can defeat the Night King and his White Walkers.
This meeting of fire and ice could symbolize the partnership between Jon Snow (ice) and Daenerys (fire) and how they need to work together to defend the threat of the Night King and his White Walkers.
Map of Westeros
Another interesting clue given in the teaser trailer for Game of Thrones 8, is that the ice is moving across a map of Westeros. The ice starts from the North – which is where, at the end of season 7, we witnessed the Night King and his White Walkers breaking through the Wall and moving toward the South. The ice freezes everything it touches on the map, but it interestingly doesn’t reach King’s Landing.
Instead, King’s Landing has its own issues in this teaser trailer for Game of Thrones 8. King’s Landing is shown to be bursting into flames. This could be a clue pointing towards the growing conflict between Daenerys and Cersei, with the fire possibly suggesting a dragon-attack on King’s Landing and a possible claim to the Iron Throne.
This first teaser trailer for Game of Thrones 8 is only the start of the hype that HBO is gonna build up until the series is released in April 2019.
Game of Thrones 8 will be the shortest Game of Thrones in the history of the series, with only 6 episodes. Season 7 also had a shorter number of episodes, with only 7 episodes. All the previous seasons had 10 episodes each. However, don’t despair, as each episode of Game of Thrones 8 will be the longest in the show’s history.
Game of Thrones 8 is sure to be spectacular and dramatic ending to an awesome show that first debuted in 2011. The show is based on the books by George R.R. Martin.
