Influential movies leave us feeling breathless after we’ve watched them. We watch influential movies over-and-over until they become part of our pop culture DNA.
An Italian study has evaluated 47 000 movies on IMDb, across 26 genres to find the most influential movies of our time. The researcher from the University of Turin studied when and how many times a movie was referenced in movies that were made after it. The researchers then collected this data to study citation patterns to determine the most influential movies.
The Most Influential Movie Of All Time
From all of the influential movies, the classic The Wizard of Oz was found to be the most influential movie of all time.
Judy Garland portrays the role of Dorothy in this iconic 1939 movie, which is now cemented as one of the most important movies ever made, according to the Italian study.
Other Influential Movies
Coming in at second place is the 1977 mega-hit, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The rest of the top 20 influential movies are:

- 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968);
- Metropolis (1927);
- Citizen Kane (1941);
- The Birth of a Nation (1915);
- Frankenstein (1931);
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937);

The Most Influential Directors
The study also found which directors have the most influence in the movie industry.
It comes as no surprise that Alfred Hitchcock, the director of influential movies like Pshyco, The Birds, Vertigo, and many many more.
Coming in at second place is Steven Spielberg, who is responsible for masterpieces like the Jaws franchise, E.T., and most recently, Ready Player One.
Other influential directors include:
- Brian De Palma;
- Howard Hawks;
- John Ford;
- Marin Scorsese;
- Ingmar Bergman;
- Stanley Kubrick;
- Gerald Thomas; and
- Ishirō Honda.
