Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4, Xbox One)

Metacritic Score: 97

Red Dead Redemption 2 may not be for everyone, but even if you don’t think it is as cool as God of War, you have to admit that it is a technical marvel and most likely the best-looking game we have seen this entire generation.

Development by Rockstar took over eight years. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in America in 1899 at the end of the Wild West era. It stars Arthur Morgan and the Van de Linde gang as they trek through great America on the run after a gang heist goes terribly wrong. If you are looking for an immersive experience, a gripping story, and a stunning world to explore, Red Dead Redemption offers that and so much more.

Celeste (PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch)

Metacritic Score: 93

From the creators of Towerfall, came Celeste in 2018. This adorable platforming game put you to the test as you controlled Madeline on a perilous journey to the top of Celeste Mountain.

The game was filled with harsh platforming, a funky old-school soundtrack, and addictive gameplay that kept you going even when you kept dying over and over again. You would have to use all the skills you learn along the way and master all the environments to assure that Madeline made it up the mountain in one piece. Kicking off walls, dashing through the air and performing stunts was key to winning this fantastic game.

God of War (PS4)

Metacritic Score: 94

Santa Monica Studios did a great job reinventing much of God of War’s mechanics, world and story.

Set years after the events of God of War III, Kratos is now living in hiding in a Norse realm of Nifelhiem. His son Atreaus plays a key role in the game’s story as the two set off on an adventure to scatter the ashes of their loving wife and mother at the tallest mountain in the realm. But it is not as simple as it sounds as deadly threats, Norse Gods and a dangerous world fills their adventure. A gorgeous open world, addictive RPG combat, a deep loot system, and a superb story. This is God of War and it is one of the top 2018 games you need to play.

Monster Hunter: World (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Metacritic Score: 90

Very early into 2018, all the way back in January a JRPG released that set the bar for all Monster Hunter games to come. Monster Hunter: World is the biggest and most ambitious in the series to date and delivers an action-packed experience full of giant monster slaying, exploration, and adventure.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch)

Metacritic Score: 93

Nintendo’s popular brawler has always been a fan favourite around the world and it has grown bigger and better with every release. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the biggest ever made with 70 fighters and 103 stages to fight on.

The game includes everyone’s favourite Nintendo characters along with fighters from other game franchises such as Bayonetta, Metal Gear Solid and even Sonic the Hedgehog. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also contains a stellar story campaign which could be the best in the series to date. It sees you venture to another world as you try and save all the fighters that have been cloned into evil versions of themselves.

Forza Horizon 4 (Xbox One/Windows 10)

Metacritic Score: 92

While 2018 was short of racing games, Forza Horizon 4 made up for them all in so many ways. Following in the series’ footsteps, Forza Horizon 4 took players to the great hills of the UK where they drove through deadly weather and gorgeous sunshine as the game’s biggest features adapted depending on what season it was at the time.

Forza Horizon 4 featured the biggest car roster in the game’s history as well as new ways to race off and on road thanks to the expansive categories of cars that suited everyone’s needs. There was simply nothing else like it this year.

Astro Bot: Rescue Mission (PS VR)

Metacritic Score: 90

We never thought we would see the day where a PS VR game makes it to the top 2018 games list. Well, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission deserves every inch of respect it gets because it is just a magical game full of charm and adventure.

The game teleports you into a selection of unique and breathtaking VR worlds where you take control of Astro Bot as he tries to save his fellow robots that have been scattered across the lands. Sure, the plot may sound pretty first grade but the game makes up for it in so many ways. It’s platforming, great use of VR and visually-pleasing levels deliver an experience you have to experience to believe.

Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4)

Metacritic Score: 87

While there are other games that had higher critic scores this year, we could not have the top 2018 games list without including the awesome Marvel’s Spider-Man. This game swung into our lives and changed our outlook on superhero games forever. It was without a doubt one of the best superhero games ever made and the bar is set pretty high now for those that wish to challenge it.

Marvel’s Spider-Man took us on a crazy and explosive adventure through New York as we fought Mister Negative and his gang of villains. With a gorgeous open world to explore, great combat and a story good enough to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel’s Spider-Man was another masterpiece in 2018.
