We all now famously know who Luke Skywalker’s father is, after it was dramatically revealed in the Star Wars movie, The Empire Strikes Back. But have you ever thought who Darth Vader’s father is?

The topic of Darth Vader’s father came up in the 1997 movie, The Phantom Menace. In this iteration, we’re introduced to a young Anakin Skywalker and his mother Shmi, who were slaves on the planet of Tatooine. The topic of his paternity does come up, though. Shmi tells Obi-Wan Kenobi that “there was no father“. It almost gave off the biblical idea of an impregnated woman, without the help of a man. Instead, it was assumed that Darth Vader’s father was some mystical Force happening.

Now, we’ve learned from Marvel Comics’ Darth Vader, No. 25 who exactly Darth Vader’s father was and how he was conceived. Darth Vader opens a portal to the afterlife in an attempt to resurrect his deceased wife, Padmé Amidala. While he searches for her, he witnesses his own creation.

It’s revealed that Darth Sidious aka Emperor Palpatine is Darth Vader’s father. Sort of. We’re shown a scene where Darth Sidious’s Force ghost is lurking behind Smhi. He then uses the Dark Side of the Force to impregnate her with Anakin. To do this, Darth Sidious manipulated midichlorians (essentially the Force) in Shmi’s womb, in order for her to conceive Anakin. This act indirectly makes Darth Sidious Darth Vader’s father.

Darth Vader's Father

This is quite the reveal by Star Wars and Disney, as it was always assumed that Darth Vader was the Chosen One and therefore created from the Force. Now, it turns out, he was created by Darth Sidious rather.

It might not have been such a big reveal like Luke’s paternity, but it’s still a massive revelation in the bigger scheme of Star Wars things. This explains why Darth Sidious was so invested in Anakin from the moment he started his Jedi training.
