10. Battlefield V
Battlefield V may not be as polished as Battlefield 1 or Star Wars: Battlefront 2, but it is still a gorgeous game. DICE truly developed a technical marvel on their in-house Frostbite engine and the proof is in the pudding as the game’s visuals are remarkable. On console, Battlefield V runs at a solid 60FPS even with all the other players running around on the battlefield. Its implementation of HDR is one of the best we have seen. The game does a great job delivering a dark World War II setting and its visuals are next-level impressive.
9. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the final game in the current trilogy and there was no doubt that Crystal Dynamics would go out with a bang by creating one of the best looking games in the series. Shadow of The Tomb Raider is gorgeous and the engine manages to bring every location and tomb you explore in Meso-America, to life. The jungle lives and breathes on your screen and the characters look fantastic. Everything in the game is polished and the attention to detail is outstanding.
8. Far Cry 5
Ubisoft’s latest entry in the Far Cry 5 series is one you don’t want to miss. Set in Hope County, which was created with heavy inspiration from Montana in the US, the game delivers a true open world experience that comes to life using Ubisoft’s DECIMA engine. The various biomes you explore in the game all offer a unique visual treat and, every location looks superb on screen.
7. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
Assassin’s Creed: Origins was already one of the best looking games in the series and it was almost perfect. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey perfected the formula by delivering one of the best looking games in an open world experiences of 2018. Set in Greece during 431 BC, the game takes you through the Greek Isles and is an exceptional visual experience. Every island you visit looks unique, every town you enter has towering Greek God statues around you, and every temple is brought to life with its life-like scaling and realistic architecture.
6. God of War
God of War is probably the best game of 2018 and with that comes a visual experience you will never forget. In the latest God of War, Kratos leaves his Greek livelihood behind for a Norse setting. The game is set in Midgard, and Santa Monica Studios managed to bring the world and everything around Kratos to life, truly transporting the players into a different realm. From the opening moments right until the end, the experience is just one visual feast. Dragons, giant world serpents, massive trolls and giants were all crafted with the utmost care to deliver such fearful beauty that you cannot help but feel part of the world.
5. Forza Horizon 4
Who would have thought that Microsoft and PlayGround games could improve on perfection from Horizon 3? Forza Horizon 4 is all about seasons and throughout the game, you race through a UK-inspired open world as the seasons change around you.
4. Horizon Zero Dawn
Guerrilla Games’ new series blew everyone away when it released back in 2017. The game follows Aloy through her journey in a world where civilization has not existed since the machines took over hundreds of years ago. Story aside, the game’s open world is stunning and it could be one of the best looking games made to visually delight players for a long time. Everything you see in the game leaves a lasting impression on you. The sheer amount of beauty is thanks to the attention to detail that brings the world to life.
3. Marvel’s Spider-Man
It has been a long time since we had a decent Spider-Man video game and this year’s Marvel’s Spider-Man delivered a gorgeous open world experience that was fun to play and great to look at. New York city was brought to life in a way we never thought possible and the game’s stunning visuals complemented the great story that all combined into an adventure you just did not want to put down. Marvel’s Spider-Man ran beautifully on the PS4 and the PS4 Pro took it further with a higher resolution that delivered stunning visuals when combined with HDR.
2. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
While there could be a lot of other games that could take this second spot on this list, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is just a beautiful game that needs to be recognized for its gorgeous visuals. Set in India, the game comes to life in so many stunning ways. There was something so special about exploring the Western Ghats and all its beauty it had to offer. The tombs, the jungles, the great temples, and even the rivers. The world is really one of the best looking ones in the Uncharted series and it deserves to be acknowledged for that.
1. Red Dead Redemption 2
Booting up Red Dead Redemption 2 for the first time and playing it for a few weeks, we feel strongly that the game is without a doubt the best-looking experience of this generation and possibly ever made. The open world is just perfect and everything the game does is utter perfection. From the characters to the lands, to the towns and animals. It’s just out of this world and it’s going to be a long time before something comes out that beats this.
